VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects and Hair and Media Makeup (QCF)

 

Course outline:

This qualification is a vocational qualification for learners wishing to pursue a career as a employed/self- employed make-up artist working with performers, providing hair and make-up services in the media, theatre, performing arts, fashion and photographic industries.

The content of this qualification is comprised of mandatory units including:  Health and safety, client care, airbrush, camouflage and media makeup.  You will also enhance your skills with optional units such as bridal hairstyling and fantasy hair design.

The purpose of this qualification is to develop your skills in theatrical hair and makeup to a high level of occupational ability, to enable you to perform your own services.

 

Course content:

- Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon

- Client care and communication in beauty-related industries

- Apply airbrush make-up to the face

- Camouflage make-up

- Media make-up

- Fashion and photographic make-up

- Style and fit postiche

- Apply prosthetic pieces and bald caps

- Bridal hairstyling

- Fantasy hair design for performers

 

Assessment methods:

Students are continually assessed throughout the course through practical and written tests and assignments.

 

Further training/development:

Career opportunities as a theatrical media make-up artist exist in a variety of contexts, including:

- Working in commercial hair/beauty salons

- Working independently/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings

- Working in television, film, theatre and media, photographic studios

 

Whilst this qualification's primary purpose is to prepare learners for employment as a professional theatrical media make-up artist, learners may choose to further develop their knowledge and skills by undertaking a technical level qualifications in hairdressing or salon management at level 4.

Students under the age of 19 are government funded, funding may be available for over 19's depending on circumstances.  Mature students may also be eligible for a government 24+ learning loan - ask for details on application.

Course entry requirements:

Entry onto this qualification can be via previous attainment of a Level 2 qualification in hair or beauty and/or a successful skills test and interview.
