The English department at Cedars is staffed by ten subject specialist teachers, including an Assistant headteacher and the school’s Literacy Coordinator.  Our team includes a wealth of experience and expertise teaching in Years 9 through to 13.

Our vision in the English department is to provide a supportive environment that fosters independence, self-discipline and enjoyment of learning.

We offer a comprehensive curriculum which aims to enrich and challenge pupils in the ways they read, write and understand the world around them. We adapt to the needs of new GCSE specifications and begin introducing and teaching the required skills in Year 9, providing a three year Key Stage 4 course.

During Years 9 to 11 pupils will study a range of fiction and non-fiction texts from Shakespeare, through the nineteenth century up to the modern day. Pupils will explore poetry, whole novels, plays and a variety of print and digital media.

Our A Level Literature courses encourage independent thought and investigation into a wide range of texts and authors: Shakespeare, Milton, Caron Ann Duffy, Emily Bronte, Ian McEwan, Tennessee Williams, Khaled Hosseini to name a selection.

In English Language students investigate language use in modern day society and how it has changed over time. They carry out an independent language investigation and also explore children’s language acquisition.

Film Studies allows pupils to explore a popular form through critical and analytical investigation. Social and cultural aspects of film are discussed for example when studying films such as L. A. Confidential, City of God and Fight Club. Students also have the opportunity to produce and edit their own film.

We work closely with the library in terms of using resources and developing pupils’ research skills. We also collaborate to hold literary events, such as author visits, writing workshops, reading groups, debate clubs, and literary competitions (e.g. literary Just a Minute).

We take an active part in national and international events such as World Book Day and National Poetry Day, which also includes internal and external short story and poetry writing competitions.
