The Design & Technology department is staffed by a highly qualified team who exemplify the benefits of both youth and experience. All members of the team are specialists in one or more subject area and continue to develop their expertise across the subject through teaching the full range of subjects we offer at key stage 3.

We can boast excellent facilities and technical support staff providing our students with learning opportunities many schools would struggle to facilitate. The engineering workshop allows us to teach engineering GCSE, BTEC and City & Guilds courses using both traditional lathes and milling machines whilst our new CAD suite provides access to state of the art laser cutters, 3D printers and CADCAM machinery.

In Food Technology we have two fully equipped Food rooms, which all students make use of during the course of Year 9.  Their curriculum has been developed to engage and provide essential life skills for the future.

Our recently revised KS3 Design Technology curriculum aims to simulate an interest in practical creativity and provide an insight to the range of subjects offered at GCSE and A level. Schemes of learning written by all members of the team provide tangible outcomes for students to take home whilst developing skills and knowledge useful in preparation for studying any of the Level 2 courses available in Y10.

Alongside Product Design, Graphic Products, Food Technology and we currently run three Level 2 Engineering courses, GCSE and BTEC running alongside our long established City & Guilds Qualification.

The department offers a range of extra-curricular clubs and national competitions for students of all ages. This reflects the diverse range interests held by members of the team and includes a Wargames Club, Engineering Club, the F1 Challenge, the First Lego League, Student Robotics, Fashion club, and the offer of support starting up any technology club students would like to see running at Cedars.

At KS5 we offer Product Design, Graphic Design & Fashion and Clothing.  Fashion and Clothing students produce garments that appear in the School’s Fashion Show, which is a very successful event.

Students are also able to make use of the facilities informally developing strong positive relationships with staff and contributing to their independent learning capacity. During recent years we have forged solid working relationships with many local, national and international organisations that provide curriculum support, employment opportunities and investment. Our partners include companies such as Be Aerospace, Studioworx, Selex ES, Think Packaging, Waitrose and ABB. These companies support students by offering visits, onsite training, competitions and work experience.

The range of courses offered by the department provide opportunities for students of all abilities and learning styles to excel and secure excellent results for vocational courses and positive working relationships with all learners.
